Danmarks Nationalbank has a monopoly on producing and issuing Danish banknotes and coins.
Subject to the approval of the Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, Danmarks Nationalbank determines the appearance of Danish banknotes and coins and their denominations, i.e. "how many kroner" each banknote and coin is worth.
Banknotes are printed at the Banknote Printing Works in the Danmarks Nationalbank building in central Copenhagen. Coins are produced at the Royal Danish Mint in Brøndby near Copenhagen. Danmarks Nationalbank took over the Royal Mint from the government in 1975.
Banknotes and coins are put into circulation via the banks
As required, banks are supplied with banknotes and coins by Danmarks Nationalbank, and their current-account balances are reduced correspondingly. The procedure is basically the same as when an ordinary customer withdraws cash from a bank account and the amount is deducted from the customer's account.
Danmarks Nationalbank supplies banknotes and coins to Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland via a network of cash depots which are owned and administered by the banks.
In the summer of 2006, the Royal Danish Mint opened an online shop with a view to servicing Danish and foreign coin enthusiasts and collectors.
