Hjejlen is the motif on the tenth coin in the ship series.
On 8 June 2011, Danmarks Nationalbank issued a new 20-krone coin with the paddle steamer Hjejlen as its motif.
The coin showing Hjejlen is minted in 0.7 million copies. It is of the same size and alloy as the ordinary circulating 20-krone coin. The obverse side of the coin carries the portrait of Danish Queen Margrethe II.
Hjejlen is the world's oldest paddle steamer still operating. It was built in Copenhagen in 1861 and thus this year marks its 150 years anniversary. The original idea was that the paddle steamer would stimulate the tourism to Himmelbjerget.
The coin has been designed by medallist at the Royal Danish Mint, Henrik Wiberg who also designed the ship coin depicting the royal yacht Dannebrog.
Run the mouse over the image and check the coin details. To turn the coin kept the left mouse button down while you drag the mouse over the image.
Proof version
The coin was also minted in a proof version for collectors. This quality is minted using extremely well-polished dies and with extra strokes, which provides a silky smooth, clearly embossed motif. The price for a proof coin, delivered in a box, is DKK 125 incl. VAT.
The proof version was only on sale at Danmarks Nationalbank (Banking Services) and via www.royalmint.dk in the period 9-15 June 2011.
Special coin letter
To mark the Hjejlen’s 150th anniversary, Post Danmark and the Danish Royal Mint have in this connection made a special coin letter containing the new stamp and the new 20-krone coin - DKK 99.
The next ship coin is expected to be issued in the spring of 2012.
