Reestablishment of the coinage after inferior metal value
The coinage was based on silver, but to give the kings – and thus the state – an easy source of income, the metal value was gradually reduced, and thus did not correspond to face value. Coinage was reestablished in 1397 by Queen Margrete I. However, the privilege of coining was still used to reduce the metal value of the coins, with the result that the inferior Danish coins were to a large extent replaced by foreign coins.
