A general price drop had led to an increased debt burden for agriculture, so that farmers wished to convert to loans at a lower rate of interest. In 1886-96 there was a wave of conversions of both government loans and mortgage-credit loans. In 1895 Danmarks Nationalbank participated in conversion transactions whereby the interest rate was lowered to 3 1/2 per cent.
