Motifs
The portrait of Jens Juel is a self-portrait painted in Dresden in 1773/74 when the artist was around 28 years old. The original is the property of the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen. The portrait is also found in the watermark on this banknote, as well as on the 10-, 50- and 500-krone banknotes in the same series.
The "red underwing" butterfly is reproduced from a watercolour by Ib Andersen (1907-1969).
Re-issued in revised version
In 1995 the 100-krone banknote was re-issued in a revised version with enhanced protection against counterfeiting. At that time, Danmarks Nationalbank had commissioned a new printing press using an improved printing technique, making it possible to add new and better security features to the banknote. These new features included microprint, a partly visible metallic security thread and strong colours (diamond pattern on the banknote). Only the 100-krone banknote in the 1972 series was issued in a revised version, known as the 1972A series.
