Motif on the reverse - Hvannasund

A watercolour depicting Hvannasund, the channel between Boršoy and Višoy, is the motif on the reverse of the 500-krone banknote. The narrow channel is spanned by a road-dam built in 1973-74. Before the dam was built, the strong currents often made it difficult to cross the sound.

On one side of Hvannasund, on the west side of Višoy, lies the village of Hvannasund. The motif depicts the sound seen from the north with the village of Hvannasund and its church. In the background, there is a glimpse of Norštoftir on Boršoy.

The watercolour is by Zacharias Heinesen, who chose Hvannasund as his motif because the sound is a paradise for shellfish. This ties in with the shore crab on the face of the 500-krone banknote. Hvannasund was also chosen for its beauty. “In fine weather, this sound, with its backdrop of high, steep fells and its mirror-smooth waters, is an unparalleled panorama. At times, the waters are so still that the landscape is actually reflected upside down. This is quite a breathtaking sight,” explains Zacharias Heinesen.
