The polar bear is chosen because of its great importance to the Greenland culture. On the coin you will see the polar bear standing on a split ice floe.
The motif is designed by the Greenland artist Niels Motzfeldt, who also designed the motif on the tower coin "Three Brothers".
"I have illustrated the oncoming polar bear with the idea that it will seek new hunting grounds in the future and thereby may conflict with humans. The ice floe, which crosses the middle circle, is symbolising that the oceans will overflow their banks", tells Niels Motzfeldt.
The polar bear was minted in three different versions: a gold coin in Greenlandic gold, a silver coin and an ordinary 10-krone coin.
1000-krone gold coin
The gold coin is minted in 900 ‰ gold (Au) with diameter 22.0 mm, weight 8.65 gram, and has a face value of 1000 kroner. ''Best gold coin'' winner in Berlin
100-krone silver coin
The silver coin is minted in 999 ‰ fine silver (Ag) with diameter 38,0 mm, weight 31,1 gram, and has a face value of 100 kroner. |
