Requirements of the portraits

The portraits on the five banknotes - 1997 series - have been selected to be clearly distinguishable from each other. This makes it easier to identify each banknote.

The five banknotes bear portraits of respectively Karen Blixen, Carl Nielsen, Johanne Luise Heiberg and Niels Bohr, and a double portrait of Anna and Michael Ancher. All are people who have made a noteworthy contribution to Danish art or science.

Selected for their differences
The portraits have been selected to be clearly distinguishable from each other. There are portraits of both women and men. The people portrayed are from different ages, as shown by the variations in their clothes and hairstyles. This makes it easier to identify each banknote.

Requirements of the portraits
The six people were selected on the basis of a careful review of portraits of Danish men and women. A number of requirements must be met before a portrait is selected. Firstly, it must be a precise and vivid portrait of the person in question, and it must be suitable for reproduction as a copperplate engraving. The portrait should be sculptural and have clear lines. Finally, it is a Danish tradition not to depict living persons on banknotes.
