It is important that confidence in the banknotes and coins is maintained and that reproductions cannot be mistaken for genuine banknotes or coins. In addition, the copyright must be respected. Consequently, Danmarks Nationalbank has prepared these guidelines for reproduction of Danish banknotes and coins.
Reproductions of banknotes
Reproductions of banknotes may be used to illustrate financial value in contexts where focus is not on the design of the banknotes. In such situations, the following guidelines must be observed.
Guidelines for use of banknotes as illustrations:
• Banknotes may be reproduced in print at more than 140 per cent or less than 70 per cent of their length and height.
• If reproduced in actual size, no more than 1/3 of the banknotes may be shown.
• Banknotes may be reproduced electronically and on the Internet at a resolution not exceeding 72 dpi.
As a main rule, reproduction may not take place if the design itself or parts thereof are in focus, irrespective of size, etc.

Reproductions of coins
Like banknotes, coins may be reproduced to illustrate financial value.
However, no guidelines apply to the size or resolution of coin reproductions, provided that the coins are not reproduced in materials that could involve a risk of mistaking them for genuine coins, cf. the counterfeiting rules.
As a main rule, reproduction may not take place if the design itself or parts thereof are in focus.
Furthermore, anyone reproducing coins should be aware that state symbols and portraits of the Queen may not be reproduced without the permission of the Danish National Archives and the Court, respectively, cf. the rules on use of state symbols and the right to own portraits.
Special situations in which banknotes and coins should not be reproduced
Even though the above guidelines are observed, there may be situations where banknotes and/or coins should not be reproduced as illustrations.
• For example, elements of the motifs or designs of the banknotes or coins should not be part of a private individual's or company's profile or logo – or otherwise give the impression that the banknotes or coins have a special link to the company and/or person in question.
• Reproduction of banknotes and coins should not be used in circumstances which might encourage counterfeiting. An example is the use of banknotes to demonstrate photocopiers, printers and scanners.
Familiarise yourself with the law
It is always the responsibility of the individual person or company wishing to use banknotes and coins as illustrations to ensure that all relevant legislation is observed. Danmarks Nationalbank is the issuing authority and holds the copyright to the design of Danish banknotes and coins. Danmarks Nationalbank is not the granting authority and consequently cannot approve projects or illustrations beforehand.
The primary legislation in this area is:
• The provisions of the Copyright Act on protection of works of art, including banknote and coin designs
• The provisions of the Criminal Code on counterfeiting
• The provisions of the Marketing Act on good marketing practice
