The purposes of the International Monetary Fund are to:
- Promote international monetary cooperation and exchange rate stability;
- Facilitate international trade, and thereby contribute to an economic environment that ensures high levels of employment;
- Assist in the establishment of a multilateral system of payments in respect of current transactions between members and in the elimination of foreign exchange restrictions which hamper the growth of world trade;
- Make resources of the Fund available through lending to member counties with balance-of-payments problems.
The IMF's head office is in Washington, DC, USA. Nearly all countries in the world are members, including Denmark. Denmark's relations with the IMF are handled by Danmarks Nationalbank in cooperation with the Danish Ministry of Finance.
IMF has financial resources at its disposal in the form of subscriptions corresponding to about kr. 1,950 billion in April 2011. Approximately 75 per cent of the resources are included in the IMF's Financial Transactions Plan.
The IMF has set up an Independent Evaluation Office to evaluate the organisation's operations with a mission to promote greater understanding of the work of the Fund and to strengthen the Fund's external credibility. The Office invites everybody, individuals and organisations alike, to contribute with their comments. |
