Emma Mærsk is the motif on the ninth coin in the ship series.
On 18 March 2011, Danmarks Nationalbank issued a new 20-krone coin with the container vessel Emma Mærsk as its motif.
The ship coin Emma Mærsk was issued in an edition of 0.8 million coins in ordinary circulation.
Shipping is important to the Danish economy, and especially container ships play a prominent role in modern Danish shipping. So it was obvious to include a container ship in the series as a representative of the Danish merchant fleet in the 21st century.
The Emma Mærsk is a state-of-the-art container ship and among the very largest in her class. She was launched at the end of 2006 and sails on a regular route between the Far East and Europe through the Suez Canal.
She sails approximately 170,000 nautical miles a year, corresponding to 7½ times around the world. When fully loaded, she holds 11,000 full 20-foot containers or 14,700 empty containers.
The motif was designed by the sculptor Torben Ebbesen, who has chosen to show only the middle part of the ship. Torben Ebbesen describes his work with the motif on the website of the Royal Danish Mint. He has previously designed the ”Nightingale” coin in the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale series and the ”Selandia” coin, the third in the ship series.
