On 28 September 2000 a majority of Danish voters (53.1 per cent against 46.9 per cent) voted against adopting the euro in Denmark. The turnout at the referendum was 87.5 per cent. As a result of the referendum, Denmark continues to be a non-euro area EU member state, but the krone is still closely linked to the euro via the Exchange Rate Mechanism, ERM II. Danish monetary policy thus shadows the policy of the European Central Bank, ECB.
