Slovenia adopted the euro

On 1 January 2007, Slovenia adopted the euro and became the 13th member of the euro area. Slovenia is thus the first new EU member state from the 2004 enlargement to join the euro area.

On the basis of the assessments by the Commission and the ECB, the Ministers of Economic Affairs and Finance of the EU member states (the Ecofin Council) decided in July 2007 that Cyprus and Malta could adopt the euro on 1 January 2007.
