Ship coins


​​​​In 2007, Danmarks Nationalbank launched the first coin in the Ship coin series. The series comprises twelve coins and depicts different types of ships selected to cover as many aspects as possible of Danish maritime history.

​Vædderen (the Ram) 
Vædderen (the Ram) is the motif of the first coin in a new series of coins with ships as their common theme. Vædderen had been circumnavigating the Earth on the third Galathea Expedition since August 2006 . The coin was issued on 25 April 2007 and the motif was designed by the sculptor Øivind Nygård.

 
 
 
Fregatten Jylland (Frigate Jutland)
The second coin in the series was issued on 10 September 2007 with the Frigate Jylland as its motif. The motif for the coin was designed by the sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen.
 
 
 
Selandia (M/S Selandia)
The third coin in the ship coin series was issued on 17 April 2008 with the M/S Selandia as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Torben Ebbesen.
 
  
Havhingsten (viking ship the Sea Stallion)
The fourth coin in the ship coin series was issued on 8 August 2008  with the viking ship Sea Stallion as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Erik Varming.
 
 
Kongeskibet Dannebrog (Royal Yacht Dannebrog)
The fifth coin in the ship coin series was issued on 22 September 2008 with the Royal Yacht Dannebrog as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Henrik Wiberg. In addition to the ordinary 20-krone coin for circulation, a collector's coin in proof quality and 500-krone coin in silver were issued in a limited number. On the silver coin the monogram of Her Majesty the Queen is included.
 
 
 
Fyrskib XVII (Lightship XVII)
The sixth coin in the ship coin series was issued on 27 May 2009 with the Lightship XVII as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Karin Lorentzen.
 
 
 
Færøbåd (a Faroe boat)
The seventh coin in the ship coin series was issued on 2 November 2009 with a Faroe boat as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen who is Faroese himself.
  

 
Kajak-Konebåd (Greenlandic Kayak-Umiak)
The eighth coin in the ship coin series was issued on 29 November 2010 with a Greenlandic Kayak-Umiak as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Niels Motzfeldt.​
 

Emma Mærsk
The ninth coin in the ship coin series was issued on 18 March 2011 with the container vessel Emma Mærsk as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Torben Ebbesen.
 
 
 
Hjejlen (paddle steamer Hjejlen)
Paddle steamer Hjejlen is the motif on the tenth coin in the ship coin series. The coin was issued on 8 June 2011 to mark the Hjejlens 150 year anniversary. Furthermore, Post Danmark and the Royal Danish Mint issued a special coin letter containing a new stamp and the 20-krone coin. The motif was designed by medallist at the Royal Danish Mint, Henrik Wiberg.
 
 
  

Kong Frederik IX (ferry King Frederik IX)
The eleventh coin in the ship coin series was issued on 29 May 2012 with the ferry Ki​ng Frederik IX as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Elisabeth Toubro.

 
 
 
Fiskekutter (fishing vessel)
The twelfth coin in the ship coin series was issued on 11 December 2012 with a traditional Danish fishing vessel as its motif. The motif was designed by the sculptor Margrete Sørensen.
