Reproduction of banknotes and coins

Abstract icon Reproduction of money should always be considered carefully since it is a criminal offence to imitate and/or copy money in such a way they can be mistaken for genuine money. The responsibility to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and to ensure that illustrations cannot be mistaken for genuine money always rests on the individual person or firm wishing to use banknotes and coins as illustrations. It is not possible for Danmarks Nationalbank to approve projects or illustrations in advance.

Danmarks Nationalbank regularly receives requests from firms and private individuals about reproduction of banknotes and coins. Any reproduction of money should always be considered carefully since it is a criminal offence to imitate and/or copy money in such a way they can be mistaken for genuine money. Moreover, Danmarks Nationalbank's copyright to the banknote and coin designs must be respected.

The relevant legislation concerning reproduction of banknotes and coins is primarily:

  • The provisions of the Criminal Code on counterfeiting
  • The provisions of the Copyright Act on protection of works of art, including banknote and coin designs
  • The provisions of the Marketing Act on good marketing practice.

Money as illustration

In continuation of these legislation, Danmarks Nationalbank has prepared the following guidelines for using money as illustration in advertising, publications and similar. The responsibility to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and to ensure that illustrations cannot be mistaken for genuine money always rests on the individual person or firm wishing to use banknotes and coins as illustrations.

Danmarks Nationalbank's guidelines for reproduction of banknotes

  • Banknotes may be reproduced electronically at a resolution not exceeding 200 pixels in height when reproduced in actual size 1:1
  • Banknotes may be reproduced in print at more than 140 per cent or less than 70 per cent of their length and height
  • If reproduced in actual size, no more than 1/3 of the banknotes may be shown
  • Details and parts of the design of a banknote may not be reproduced independently of the rest of the banknote.

Danmarks Nationalbank's guidelines for reproduction of coins

As opposed to banknotes, there are no special guidelines for reproduction of coins as long as the coins are not reproduced on or in materials that can be mistaken for genuine coins.

Details and parts of the design of a coin may not be reproduced independently of the rest of the coin. Anyone reproducing coins should also be aware that state symbols and portraits of the Queen may not be reproduced without the permission of the Danish National Archives and the Court, respectively.
