Every third Dane has a mortgage
At the end of the third quarter of 2024, 1,648,664 private customers had one or more mortgage loans. This corresponds to approximately every third Dane over the age of 18. Most private customers (69 per cent) have mortgages with repayments, while the rest (31 per cent) have interest-only mortgages. The remaining debt for private customers with interest-only mortgages is typically higher than for customers who make regular repayments, respectively kr. 976,000 and 614,000. For private customers overall, the typical remaining debt is kr. 767,000. Many private customers share mortgages, for example with their partner, and their joint mortgage debt will therefore naturally be somewhat higher than that of an individual private customer. There is generally a wide variation in private customers’ mortgage debt, not least across and within regions and age groups.
Note:
The figure shows the number of Danish private customers with mortgage loans at the end of the third quarter of 2024. The figures for the remaining debt are calculated at the individual level, meaning that mortgage loans shared by private customers, for example with their partner, are distributed among the private customers who are liable for the debt. The term ‘typical’ refers to the median.

Danmarks Nationalbank, DNMUF1.
Since the beginning of 2020, Danmarks Nationalbank has collected data for all loans from banks and mortgage credit institutions in Denmark. This provides new possibilities for supplementing the aggregated statistics on banking and mortgage lending that Danmarks Nationalbank already publishes.
The new data can be found in the Statbank tables DNMUF1 and DNMUF2.
The table DNMUF1 contains the number of loans/borrowers and distributions for various sectors and a range of instruments such as mortgage loans, bank loans excl. credits, credits excl. credit cards and credit cards.
The table DNMUF2 contains more information om mortgage loans and bank loans excl. credits. In the table, the number of loans/borrowers and distributions are available for these instruments, and it is possible to subdivide into various sectors, fixed or variable interest rate and whether the loans is paid with instalments.
