Final sprint yields large pension returns in 2023

The Danes’ pension returns end up at kr. 337 billion in 2023, which is due to large returns in the last two months of the year. Up until October, the return was close to zero. The large increase in returns at the end of 2023 is driven, among other things, by large returns on stocks – especially foreign stocks – and interest rate instruments (bonds and interest rate derivatives). Thus, the return development looks the same as in 2020, when covid-19 caused large losses at the start of the year. In 2023, overall, there was a positive return across all asset classes (stocks, bonds, derivatives, etc.) in contrast to 2022, where all asset classes yielded losses, and the total loss ended up at kr. 700 billion. The large return in 2023 brings the total return since 2015 to kr. 1,118 billion.
