Small decline in turnover with payment cards in 2023

The total turnover with payment cards in Denmark ended at kr. 640 billion in 2023. That's a decrease of just under kr. 2 billion compared to 2022, when the card turnover was kr. 642 billion. The card turnover covers the nominal value of all transactions carried out in Denmark with both Danish and foreign payment cards, excl. cash withdrawals. Although overall there has only been a slight decrease in total turnover, there have been shifts in the use of card types and forms of use. The fall must also be seen in the light of the fact that the Danish consumer price index averaged 3.3 per cent higher in 2023 compared to 2022. The real value of card turnover in Denmark has thus also fallen from 2022 to 2023. On the other hand, turnover with Danish-issued cards in foreign businesses increased significantly in 2023.

Card turnover via self-service is gaining ground

In 2023, turnover with Danish-issued cards in self-service environments more than doubled compared to 2022. Self-service environments' share of card revenue increased through 2023, and for the year, self-service environments accounted for 12 per cent of the total turnover with Danish-issued cards in Denmark. The increase has occurred at the expense of turnover via staffed check out in physical stores. Despite a drop of 8 percentage points, however, the turnover via staffed check out still accounts for more than half of the total card turnover in Denmark. Over the past three years, card turnover via e-commerce has made up a stable share of around 30 per cent of the total turnover with Danish-issued cards in Denmark.

The turnover with Dankort takes up less

The share of turnover with Danish-issued cards in Denmark made with Dankort and co-branded Dankort has been decreasing in recent years, while turnover with Danish-issued international cards has been gaining ground. In 2023, Dankort and co-branded Dankort accounted for 68 per cent of the turnover. This is a decrease of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2022. The increase in turnover with the Danish-issued international cards is driven by debit cards. Here, turnover increased by almost 25 per cent in 2023, so that international debit cards now account for roughly a quarter of the turnover. Turnover with international credit cards has also gained ground and, in comparison, has increased approximately 9 per cent. The international credit cards thus make up just over 6 per cent of the total turnover with Danish-issued cards.

Large increase in turnover with Danish cards abroad

In 2023, turnover with Danish-issued payment cards in foreign physical and e-commerce stores was kr. 136 billion. This is an increase of approximately kr. 22 billion compared to 2022, corresponding to as much as 19 per cent. The increase is mainly due to an increase in turnover in the physical stores, while turnover via foreign e-commerce was largely unchanged. In 2023, the turnover with Danish cards abroad was divided between approximately kr. 63 billion (46 per cent) via physical stores and approximately kr. 74 billion (54 per cent) via e-commerce.

In comparison, card turnover with foreign-issued payment cards in Danish physical and e-commerce stores was kr. 41 billion, which is at the level of 2022. Two-thirds of the turnover was via physical stores, while the remaining third was via e-commerce etc.
