Payments
Statistics period: 1st quarter 2026

The average card payment is kr. 273

The average value of a card payment in Denmark currently amounts to around kr. 273 and has remained broadly stable over a prolonged period. Card payments cover all transactions using payment cards, including physical card payments, entry of card details in e‑commerce, and payments via wallet solutions. The development in the average value of card payments reflects several counteracting forces. Inflation, in isolation, increases the average value as identical purchases become more expensive. Conversely, the gradual decline in the use of cash in favour of digital payment solutions implies that payment cards are increasingly used for smaller‑value transactions, which reduces the average value. Behind the stable aggregate average, however, there are notable differences in both levels and developments across industries.

Different levels across industries

The aggregate average masks substantial variation in the average value of a card payment across industries. In airlines and clothing retail, the average card payment typically exceeds the overall average of kr. 273, whereas it is significantly lower in supermarkets and pharmacies. The aggregate average therefore reflects a combination of both higher and lower‑value card payments.

Greater volatility in specific industries

Although the average value of a card payment has been broadly stable overall, developments differ markedly across industries. For example, the average card payment at petrol stations closely follows movements in fuel prices. In supermarkets and pharmacies, the average value has developed more steadily, although with clear seasonal patterns. In particular, the average value tends to be higher in the period leading up to holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
