Payments
Statistics period: 3rd quarter 2026

One in three kroner paid by card in physical trade is paid using a digital wallet

The total value of Danes’ card payments was kr. 224 billion in Q3 2026. Of this amount, kr. 155 billion was paid in physical trade and kr. 68 billion in e-commerce. Digital wallets are particularly widely used in physical trade, where they were used for payments worth kr. 51 billion, corresponding to one third of the value of card payments. In e-commerce, the amount was kr. 8 billion, corresponding to approximately one in ten kroner paid by card. The use of digital wallets has increased in both physical trade and e-commerce. Two years ago, the corresponding shares were 27 per cent in physical trade and 5 per cent in e-commerce. The data only include payments made using dedicated digital wallet solutions such as Apple Pay and Google Pay and therefore do not include MobilePay. The figure shows the value of Danes’ card payments in physical trade and e-commerce in Denmark and abroad in Q3 2026, excluding cash withdrawals. The highlighted areas show the share of the total value paid using a digital wallet. The sum of physical trade and e-commerce differs from the total due to rounding.

How the payments are compiled

A digital wallet is a digital wallet, typically an app on a smartphone. Users can add their payment card to the wallet and use their phone to make payments in physical trade and in e-commerce.

Not all mobile payments are necessarily wallet payments. This applies, for example, to payments made using MobilePay or payments where the payment card has been added to a supermarket app. The figures only include payments made using actual digital wallet solutions such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Physical trade includes payments in physical stores as well as payments made in unstaffed self-service environments. For a payment to be recorded as physical trade, the payer must have used a physical payment terminal.

E-commerce includes payments made online, by mail order and telephone order, as well as through payment apps, such as supermarket apps.
