The value of foreign securities surpassed Danish ones in 2025

The value of households’ foreign securities reached kr. 667 billion in 2025. At the same time, households’ Danish securities amounted to kr. 549 billion at the end of the year. The value of foreign securities exceeded that of Danish ones since the middle of 2025, partly due to large price increases in U.S. equities. Today, Danmarks Nationalbank publishes new data shedding light on households’ investments in Danish and foreign securities.

Note:

Households’ (employees, pensioners, etc.) investments in securities, where investments through Danish investment funds are look‑through adjusted. This means that investments made via Danish investment funds are included. The data from the figure can be found here.

Price gains were partly offset by a weaker dollar

The new tables in the statistics database allow the user to see how transactions and price changes contribute to the change in households’ securities holdings. For example, they show that foreign price gains of kr. 92 billion were among the reasons why foreign investments surpassed Danish ones. However, the gains on foreign securities were partly offset by an exchange‑rate loss of kr. 40 billion, primarily driven by the weaker dollar. In contrast, Danish securities recorded a price loss of kr. 43 billion in 2025. At the end of 2025, the value of households’ total Danish and foreign securities amounted to kr. 1,216 billion, which is almost unchanged from the previous year.

Large price movements drove developments in 2025

Note:

The figure does not account for hedging through investment funds. Danish equity funds (UCITS) hedge around 1.5% of their currency exposure, mixed funds hedge 17.4%, and bond funds hedge 65%. Households primarily hold foreign equities through these funds. The data from the figure can be found here.

New tables on Danish investors’ securities holdings in Denmark and abroad

Danmarks Nationalbank is today publishing two new tables, DNVP1 and DNVP2. The tables show, respectively, who owns Danish securities and which securities are owned by Danish investors. For the first time, foreign securities are included, making it possible to get an overview of Danish investors’ total securities holdings. It is also possible to find holdings for households and for the insurance and pension sector, where ownership of securities through investment funds has been included. In addition, the tables now include data for exchange‑traded funds (ETFs). You can find the new data on Danish securities holdings here, and data on investments in Danish securities here.
