Lower level of share buybacks by Danish companies in 2025

Danish listed companies repurchased shares worth kr. 47 billion in 2025. This is the lowest level since 2020. After 2020, the level of share buybacks has generally been higher than earlier, and the buybacks have been concentrated among a few large companies. In the period from 2020 to 2023, A.P. Møller – Mærsk, Novo Nordisk and DSV accounted for the majority of the buybacks, whereas in 2024 and 2025 the buybacks were distributed across a larger number of companies. Listed companies may use share buybacks as a supplement to dividend payments to shareholders, for example in years with exceptionally large profits. Typically, companies decide on share buybacks and dividend payments at the general meeting at the beginning of the year, based on the previous year’s financial statements.
