The insurance and pension sector owns nearly half of government debt securities

The insurance and pension sector owns kr. 275 billion worth of Danish government debt securities in kroner, corresponding to a 48 pct. ownership share. This is primarily the case for long‑term bonds. Foreign investors also own a substantial share: kr. 182 billion, equivalent to 32 pct. of the outstanding government debt securities in kroner. Today, Danmarks Nationalbank publishes new data shedding light on who owns the Danish government debt securities. It is now possible to find investments in green government bonds and to identify the holdings of households and the insurance and pension sector, adjusted for ownership of securities through investment funds.
