Households hold securities worth kr. 1,517 billion
Danish households’ securities holdings have increased by kr. 130 billion since the beginning of the year and amounted to kr. 1,517 billion at the end of September 2026. Households may hold securities in ordinary securities accounts, private pension accounts, share savings accounts or accounts linked to children’s savings schemes. The majority, corresponding to two-thirds of the securities, are held in ordinary securities accounts. A significant share is, however, held in accounts linked to private pension schemes outside pension companies. Share savings accounts account for a smaller share of total holdings, while investments through children’s savings schemes account for a very limited share.
Ordinary securities accounts hold 67 per cent of households’ securities holdings

From August 2026, Danmarks Nationalbank has adjusted the data basis for securities holdings of households, small and medium-sized enterprises and public institutions. Read more about the adjustment here.
2 million private investors hold securities
The securities are held by 2 million Danes, who hold securities worth kr. 745,389 on average. However, the median value is considerably lower, at kr. 91,600. The median means that half of those who invest in securities have holdings worth less than kr. 91,600, while the other half have holdings worth more.
The large difference between the average and the median reflects the fact that a relatively small number of people have very large securities holdings, which pushes up the average. Looking at the individual account types, the difference between the average and the median varies considerably. The difference is particularly pronounced for pension accounts and ordinary securities accounts, while it is smaller for share savings accounts and children’s savings accounts, where contribution limits restrict the size of holdings.
The median holding in a pension account is DKK 228,819
