Danmarks Nationalbank introduces security-upgraded versions of the 100- and 200-krone banknotes into circulation.

Danmarks Nationalbank is upgrading security features of its 2009 banknotes series. The banknotes will be equipped with new and better security features, while motifs, featuring Danish bridges and archaeological treasures, remain unchanged according to the 15-year-old designs by Karin Birgitte Lund.

"Technological developments mean that counterfeiters are constantly getting better tools to copy banknotes," says Niels Kaas, treasurer and responsible for cash supply at Danmarks Nationalbank.

"We continuously assess the quality of banknotes' security features and ensure that they are at the forefront of technological developments," Niels Kaas continues.

Denmark will introduce a completely new series of banknotes in 2028-2029, but ahead of that Danmarks Nationalbank is upgrading security features of the current 2009 series. The 500-krone banknote was upgraded in 2020, before the ongoing update of 200- and 100-krone banknotes and the 2025 upgraded of the 50-krone banknote will put into circulation.

The security-upgraded versions of the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-krone banknotes are called the 2009A series.

The only banknote of the 2009 series that will not be security upgraded is the 1000-krone banknote, which will no longer be legal tender after 31 May 2025.

Thus, at the end of May 2025, 1000-kroner banknotes will be withdrawn along with all older series of banknotes from 1944 to 1997, which have remained in circulation. Thus, only the 50, 100, 200 and 500 krone banknotes from the 2009A series and the 2009 series can be used for cash payments after 31 May 2025 until the new banknotes are ready in 2028-2029.
