Danmarks Nationalbank will be introducing new coins into circulation on 2 December with portraits and symbols that reflect the current reigning monarch, H.M. King Frederik X.

"The coins are designed with respect for history and an eye for the present. They feature a wide range of details and symbols, some of which draw on the long traditions of Danish coin design, while others are new," says Christian Kettel Thomsen, Governor of Danmarks Nationalbank.

On the front of the new 20- and 10-krone coins is a portrait of the King by artist Eva Hjorth. On the back is the shield and crown from the royal coat of arms.

"The new coins continue a centuries-old tradition of having the reigning monarch's portrait on the obverse of the large coins. We also follow the tradition of having the coat of arms, the royal coat of arms or parts thereof on the coins," says Niels Kaas, General Treasurer of Danmarks Nationalbank.

The obverse of the 5-, 2- and 1-krone coins features the King's monogram, while the reverse features the coin's value and the text 'Danmark'. On the reverse of the new 5-, 2- and 1-krone coins, there is also a new icon that has not been used on Danish coins before.

"The icon consists of an octagon, which is the shape of Amalienborg Slotsplads. The octagon is repeated four times for the four palaces on the square, and joined into a single shape. It refers to Amalienborg and the palace square as a focal point for the Royal House and the population," says Jeanette Skov Jensen, Head of Design at Danmarks Nationalbank, who is behind the design of the new coins.

The 20-, 10-, 5-, 2- and 1-krone coins have been redesigned, while the 50-øre coin retains its current appearance as it does not bear any symbols referring to the current monarch. The five new coins are a continuation of the existing sequence of coins and have the same sizes, designs and materials.

"Even though new coins will be introduced, the old coins will still be legal tender. Both will be valid means of payment in the future," says Niels Kaas.
