As the last banknote in the current banknote series, the 50-krone banknote has now been security upgraded. The colours and images on the banknotes are the same as before, but new security features have been added to make the banknotes even harder to counterfeit.

Until Denmark gets brand new banknotes in 2028-2029, Danmarks Nationalbank has upgraded the security of the current banknote series with bridges and archaeological finds (2009 series). In 2020, the 500-krone banknote was upgraded, in 2024, the 100- and 200-krone banknotes were upgraded, and now it’s the 50-krone banknote’s turn.

“Technological developments mean that counterfeiters are continuously gaining access to more advanced methods to make counterfeit banknotes,” says Niels Kaas, Chief Cashier and Head of Cash Supply at Danmarks Nationalbank.

“That’s why we continuously assess the quality of the security features of the banknotes, and with this upgrade, the 50-krone banknotes now have the same security as the other banknotes,” he says.

The security upgraded versions of the banknotes are called the 2009A series. They are very similar to the original versions, but there are slight differences. More information about the new security features on the banknotes is available on Danmarks Nationalbank’s website. Both the original and the security-upgraded banknotes remain legal tender until the new Danish banknotes are issued in 2028-2029.

The security upgraded 50-krone banknote is the first banknote issued after Christian Kettel Thomsen and Ulrik Nødgaard became Governors in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Therefore, this is also the first time their signatures have appeared on banknotes.

The 1000-krone banknote and all older banknote series are no longer legal tender. Banknotes that are no longer legal tender can still be redeemed at three banknote exchange points in Denmark until 31 May 2026. You can also find more information on Danmarks Nationalbank’s website.
