The 2004 Enlargement of the EU
The great majority of the 10 new EU member states join the Union with a considerably lower level of wealth than the old member states. This article summarises a number of macroeconomic characteristics of the new member states and discusses their prospects of "catching up" with the rest of the EU. In addition, the perspectives of further EU enlargement are looked into.
