Costs of payments in Denmark

Danmarks Nationalbank today publishes the English version of a survey of the costs of typical payment methods at point of sale, at online merchants and for paying bills in Denmark (the Danish version was published in December 2011). The survey , which is part of a large European study coordinated by the European Central Bank, shows that there are large costs related to the payments of Danish citizens. In 2009, these costs amounted to around kr. 17 billion, which corresponds to 1 per cent of GDP. For the society as a whole the national debit card, the Dankort, is the payment method with the lowest costs for payments at point of sale. For payment of bills the national direct debit scheme, Betalingsservice, entails the lowest costs.
