Danish Government Borrowing and Debt 2014

At the end of 2014, the Danish central government debt amounted to kr. 458 billion, which is lower than the previous year. The level corresponds to 24 per cent of GDP or approximately kr. 81,000 per capita. This is low in an international context, which supports the government's highest possible rating (AAA/Aaa) from the largest international credit rating agencies.

This corresponds to a debt of 23 per cent of GDP or kr. 74,000 per capita. Despite the increase, Denmark's debt remains low compared with that of other EU member states.

Danish central-government debt increased in 2009 after a number of years with large government surpluses. At year-end, the central-government debt amounted to DKK 302 billion, corresponding to 18 per cent of GDP.

In 2008, the government surplus was DKK 52 billion, corresponding to 3 per cent of GDP. As a result of the surplus, the central-government debt was reduced to DKK 195 billion, corresponding to 11 per cent of GDP or around DKK 35,000 per capita. In 2008, the interest costs on the central-government debt totalled DKK 11.6 billion, equivalent to 0.7 per cent of GDP. Due to its low government debt, Denmark is in a favourable position compared with other countries.

Danish Government Borrowing and Debt 2007

The government debt has been reduced from approximately DKK 600 billion in 1997 to approximately DKK 250 billion in 2007 as a result of central-government surpluses for the last decade. Central-government debt is reduced from approximately DKK 115,000 per capita in 1997 to approximately DKK 45,000 per capita in 2007. Debt reduction has been particularly strong in the last three years, during which the government debt has been halved.
