  Significantly higher turnover in kroner and larger Danish foreign exchange market

  Global trade in kroner has increased significantly, and the Danish foreign exchange market has grown. A daily turnover of kr. 378 billion is generated globally, which is 36 per cent up on 2019. Total global turnover in all currencies has also increased. In Denmark, a daily turnover of kr. 571 billion is generated in all currencies, which is 22 per cent up on 2019. Increased volatility in the financial markets has contributed to the increase in turnover. This is shown by the Triennial Survey of the Foreign Exchange and Derivatives Markets conducted by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in collaboration with a number of central banks worldwide, including Danmarks Nationalbank.

  Stable turnover on the unsecured money market

  Money, foreign exchange and derivatives market

  The banks' mutual unsecured deposits in kroner were DKK 4 billion per day on average in the 2nd quarter. This is the same level as last year. The figure appears from Danmarks Nationalbank's annual money market survey, which includes the banks' mutual money market and interest rate derivatives transactions in the 2nd quarter.

  Foreign banks dominate the Danish money market

  Foreign banks are active in the market for borrowing and lending between banks, which is a market with a total daily turnover of kr. 72 billion. More than two thirds of the borrowing and lending of domestic banks in the money market is with foreign banks. This is evident from Danmarks Nationalbank's yearly money market survey, which covers the turnover in deposits and interest rate derivatives among the banks during Q2.

  Increased turnover during corona crisis

  The daily turnover in the Danish money market was kr. 93 billion in the 2nd quarter of 2020, which was an increase of 23 per cent compared to the same period last year. This appears from Danmarks Nationalbank's yearly money market survey, which includes turnover from interbank loan transactions and interest rate derivatives in the 2nd quarter. The increased turnover should be viewed in the light of elevated market volatility during the corona crisis and tighter liquidity conditions than previous years.

  Increased global turnover in kroner, but a smaller Danish foreign exchange market

  In terms of turnover, the foreign exchange market is one of the world’s largest financial markets. An efficient foreign exchange market supports cross-border trade in goods, services and financial assets, which makes it essential for the economy, especially for an open economy such as the Danish. Therefore it is important to know how the foreign exchange market functions. Danmarks Nationalbank collects data for foreign exchange turnover from banks located in Denmark. Every third year, Danmarks Nationalbank provides data about trade in foreign exchange in Denmark for international statistics of turnover in the global foreign exchange market. These statistics are coordinated by the Bank for International Settlements.

  Half of all foreign exchange trades in Denmark have one leg in euro

  Money, foreign exchange and derivatives market

  47 per cent of all trades in the Danish foreign exchange market, i.e. the market in which banks located in Denmark participate, have one leg in euro. Aggregate daily turnover in the Danish foreign exchange market is kr. 469 billion. That can be seen from the survey of the foreign exchange and derivatives market.
