Until 31 May 2026, all private individuals and businesses had the right to have 1000-krone banknotes and older banknotes exchanged if they met the applicable documentation requirements under the anti-money laundering rules. This right lapsed after 31 May 2026 and it is no longer possible to have the banknotes exchanged as a rule.
Danmarks Nationalbank may, if circumstances warrant, choose to exchange recalled banknotes in special circumstances. However, this will only be in very special cases where there are deemed to be such special circumstances.
From 1 October 2026, you can read more on Danmarks Nationalbank’s website about the process concerning special circumstances. It will also only be possible from 1 October 2026 to apply for exchange of withdrawn banknotes on the basis of special circumstances.
Danmarks Nationalbank will assess whether there are special circumstances that qualify for an exchange or not. Cases will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, but in practice the following principles will apply:
- Lack of knowledge that the banknotes became invalid after 31 May 2026, finding banknotes after the deadline or being abroad will, as a rule, not qualify for exchange after the deadline.
- Physical impediment in the submission period, illness or cognitive impairment that has prevented the rightful owner from exchanging the banknotes before the deadline will, as a rule, qualify for assessment after the deadline. This also applies to estates where, for the aforementioned reasons, the deceased rightful owner was prevented from exchanging the banknotes before the deadline.
