Danmarks Nationalbank is banker to the banks. A number of financial institutions hold accounts with Danmarks Nationalbank, which are used for e.g. transferring money among the institutions. Danmarks Nationalbank uses several systems for transfer and settlement, such as Kronos2 and Target2. One of Danmarks Nationalbank's objectives is to contribute to the safe settlement of payments.

Danmarks Nationalbank extends collateralised credit to financial institutions with a view to always ensuring sufficient liquidity in the financial system for settlement of payments. We oversee that the payment and settlement systems that are important to the financial stability are safe and efficient and follow international standards. In addition, Danmarks Nationalbank seeks to promote the efficiency and security of retail payments by participating in projects that improve the payments infrastructure and by chairing the Payments Council and providing secretariat services.
