New statistics based on daily transactions with payment cards

Danmarks Nationalbank has initiated the publication of payment statistics based on daily payment card transactions in the payment card acquiring market in Denmark. The data comes from six payment card acquirers, which are estimated to cover approximately 90 per cent of the total card turnover in Denmark. The statistics include daily reports on the number and value of payment card transactions, divided into transaction types Point of Sale (typically physical trade) and Card Not Present (typically online trade). Additionally, the report contains information on whether the card was issued in Denmark or abroad.

Explore the card turnover

In the new table, it is possible to delve into the daily card turnover with payment cards in Denmark. The card turnover covers the nominal value of all transactions processed through the payment card acquiring market in Denmark, including both physical trade and online trade, but excluding cash withdrawals. The turnover is influenced by various factors, including seasonal patterns, changing payment habits, consumer behavior, and price developments over time.

Higher card turnover leading up to Christmas

It is probably no surprise that the card turnover in December is typically higher than in other months of the year. In December 2023, the card turnover was 14.4 per cent higher than the average for the first eleven months of the year. Delving further into the data and looking at the daily card turnover in December 2023, one finds that the card turnover on most December days was significantly higher than on the corresponding weekdays for the rest of the year.

The card turnover was particularly high on December 1st and December 2nd, and again at a high level from December 19th until Christmas Eve. Possible explanations could be that the beginning of the month coincides with payday, while the generally higher card turnover in the last days before Christmas Eve may indicate that some Christmas shopping is done at the last minute. As the figures are published in the StatBank, you can follow this year’s Christmas turnover.
